Oh my! Kindle or iPad?

In my last post, I'd said I wanted to talk about the Kindle. I'd wanted to get your thoughts on it, especially if you own one and whether you like it. Well, as technology changes so quickly, yesterday Apple announced the iPad. Oh dear. More techie toys, more decisions. I'll just ride this way out for awhile and see what happens. But I would like your thoughts on it.

I don't have any stitching progress to show. I was diverted with other things this week. So I am cheating and showing you the sampler wall I made last year. I hope to build another sampler wall this year!

I did want to mention to anyone looking for Sheepish Designs charts. I found that this shop in Victoria, B.C. has Betsy and Alpha Menagerie and a few others. (I was looking for 'Aires of the green' which they don't have.) Email them and find out. They don't have a lot but that's where I bought my Betsy and the Alpha charts last year. I know some of you were looking for these. And hey, the prices are great! Good luck.

You know, I have a lot of fun with the Giveaways, ever since I made it a rule to ask a question. I just love reading your answers! As to your birthday wishes, a lot of you are quite modest and just want more stash! Somebody said to go to a Stitching Retreat! Yeah, I have never been, that would be fun. Terri takes the cake though as she wants to go to Paris to shop the Flea Markets. Yeah, I'm coming along Terri! A lot of you have said you just want more hours in the day so you can stitch! Awww, I think we all agree there!

Another thing with Giveaways is sometimes you make new friends. Eva lives in the Czech Republic and we've kept in touch. She is expecting her first baby in late March. Do go and say hi sometime. She gifted me with this lovely award.

Thank you, Eva! I am supposed to pass this onto 5 blogs but that's always difficult. Please feel free to pick up this award for yourself and say I said so! You can do a link back to this blog.

Remember the giveaway closes the end of January 31. Please go to the previous post to leave a comment.

The weekend is almost here. I wish you a happy one and I hope I can make more progress on my stitching so I can show you next time! Thanks for popping by!

Loooove your stitching wall!!! Gorgeous!

As for Kindle vs ipad. Hmmmm. Well, they say Kindle is the odd man out since it uses a different format from all the other ebook formats out there -- and ipad uses the same format as the others, epub. But! I noticed with the announcement of the ipad that they only mentioned certain publishers as being available. And they didn't brag about having x number of books available. So I do wonder how many ebooks are actually available on the ipad. That would be interesting to know. Having said that, I think the ipad looks like one cool gadget! lol! And hey, it's in color too! I do love my Kindle, but the color thing is certainly attractive. And you can use it for email and going online and for mapping and for games, and you can get all the apps available for iphone for it too (without having to buy twice). And it has the iLife series available (lets you do office stuff and picture stuff). And and and --- well I think the ipad is pretty cool. But I hold judgement on the ebook aspect till I know what books are available. Did you see that if you want to turn the page, you can just brush your finger across the page as if flipping it? Cooooool! lol! I'll stop blabbing now. lol! (Can you tell I'm into gadgets?)

What a gorgeous stitching wall!

I know nothing about Kindles or I-Pads. My cave has silly paper books in it. LOL.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE my Kindle. My only complaint is the color monitor thing...to me that's the only drawback.

I especially love the fact that I literally carry a library in my tote!

P.S. Love your sampler wall. I must get some framing done...

Love your Sampler Wall. I've been debating about getting a Kindle too... still thinking about it though.

Melissa - I just love your sampler wall! Those are some really great designs.

My son pointed out the IPad to me yesterday and I WANT ONE!!! I'm not one to buy into all the new technology, but since getting my new IMac, I am so totally sold on all things Apple and this IPad looks like its something I've been wanting. But I'll just wait a little (like May and I can drop hints for my birthday)! LOL

Wow, who knew Margaret was such a gadget girl (reading comments). I'm not much into gadgets but I kind of think the iPad is weird. It looks like an iPhone on steroids! I like the look of the Kindle but I guess the iPad can do more. Since I only read like 4 books a year I'm out of the loop. I need to go to the library more often.

Love the sampler wall!!

Hi Melissa!!! Love your sampler wall, so pretty.

A girl I worked with said she is thinking about the Ipad, I laughed because I knew nothing about it. I am not up with all the new tech toys and I am surprised my 13 yr old hasn't said something about it. Good luck with your decision.

Love your sampler wall! It's wonderful!

I don't have either a Kindle or I Pad, but I have heard good things about the Kindle from friends that have them.

I may have that pattern you are looking for! If I do, I will let you know!

Oh my! I really like your sampler wall. I am sorry I can't help either with a Kindle or Ipad.

Love the stitching wall and the beautiful pieces. I want to start some, so I can put them with my new prim look.

I'm staying out of the ipad/Kindle debate until the market sorts things out a little more, and prices come down. :D My laptop and Droid phone will keep me going till then.

Your sampler wall is so inspiring!

Love your sampler wall, it looks amazing. I have a Sony eBook reader and love it. It can also hold pictures, black and white ones, and there is mp3 capabilities, haven't tried that yet. I bought it mainly for reading and so far it does the trick. Kindle wasn't available in Canada at the time or I may have gone with it, but now the Ipad sounsd interesting too.

Margaret just cracks me up - you definitely pushed her button - now we know who to turn to about techy questions.

The men in my office have all be jabbering on about the iPad. Someone said that the because of the iPad, the kindle would become obsolete - I don't know this, I'm just repeating what I heard. I'm an audio book fan myself - I like to multitask.

What a lovely, lovely sampler wall - so many beautiful stitched pieces.

Congrats on the blog award - you are very deserving of it!

Have a wonderful weekend, Melissa!

Get a Kindle (this from a Mac user) I have the first version of Kindle, and if you are planning to read (primary goal), then the kindle wins hands down thanks the fact that it works using reflective light (eink) rather than transmissive light (LED or LCD), which is immeasurably better for the eyes.

This ipad (a friend of mine who works at the apple store and I have dubbed it the iMaxi!) is too little device for the money, and anyone who possibly has the patience should wait for them to work out the *MANY* kinks and see if they still want it in 8 months to a year when version 2 hits. Plus, as it doesn't start shipping for 60 days yet, you'll be in luck if you get one before 6 months are out. Rabid appleites are, well, rabid.

Your sampler wall is wonderful Melissa, such a lovely set of samplers! :)

I have no idea about either the iPad or the Kindle, apart from the fact that the Kindle is wayyyyyy out of my price range ;)

I love your sampler wall Melissa! Of course, I'm looking at the picture and seeing several finished pieces and thinking how nice they are and how I have them in my stash and how maybe I should think about stitching them!!!!

Congrats on the blog award!

Kindle or iPad. I'm afraid I'm of no help there as I'm still doing it the old-fashioned way!

Your sampler wall is gorgeous, Melissa! You and I like so many of the same things so Yes!!! Lets go to Paris together! We'd have a blast!!!

Your sampler wall's just wonderful, Melissa. You could just look at it all day long. :)

New technology is so enticing. I've read the iPad is a little heavy and don't know a lot about the Kindle. Maybe wait for the updated version of the iPad to see if it's a winner. I still like the old fashioned way of reading a book, myself.

That's a beautiful sampler wall. It looks very different from mine, which has always been one of the fun things about stitching ... everyone does their own thing.

Kindle or iPad? Neither. I like real books. I like turning pages.

Ohhhhhh! What a gorgeous sampler wall this is. And all these lovely samplers. I love them all. I'd love to have a sampler wall too. too.

Hi. I found your blog via KarenV. Lovely sampler wall! My last medium-ish finish was the the BOAF bee skep (same as your upper left) and I also have the same sampler stitched (bottom right). Unfortunately mine are still unframed. I'd love to have a sampler wall like that!

Hi Melissa,
I keep drooling over your sampler wall! It is absolutely gorgeous!! :)

As for the Kindle vs. iPad... I don't have either, but I will share my thoughts. :) I want an e-reader eventually. I am thinking I may wait and keep watching the iPad before I jump into one. I like the fact that iPad has a lot of different functions including the e-reader. As for cost, the iPad is more, but I think all the other features more than make up for the difference. My brother has a first generation Kindle. He loved it when he first got it (he's had some issues with it not functioning lately and needs to have it repaired). I tried his Kindle out a time or two. I liked it. I liked that the screen was very easy on the eyes...wondering how the screen on the iPad will be. I have the Kindle app on my iTouch, and it gets too bright after awhile. I could not read exclusively on my iTouch. A friend of mine brought her Nook to work today and we "played" with it for awhile. I LOVED it! She loves it. For me the choice would be iPad vs. Nook... I don't know if the Nook/Barnes and Noble is an option in Canada. If it is, I would encourage you to check into it too before you make a choice. Let me know what you decide. Not an easy choice, is it? :)
Have a great weekend!

I love your sampler wall! I have a Kindle and love it, even though here in the UK the choice of books is still a little limited compared to US Kindle owners. But now I've seen the iPad....and I really want one! Good job they're not available in the UK for a few months, give me chance to save up. I already have an iPhone and have just recently switched from PC to iMac, I guess I'm turning into an Applefan!

Love the sampler wall! I've stitched 2 of those projects, and have one of them in progress! I love my Kindle. I bought the original Kindle when if first came out -- and then carelessly left it on an airplane. I had to replace with the Kindle2 immediately because it's essential for me (since I travel a lot for work). I will check out the iPad, but probably not for a year or so. I have an iPhone and love the apps! But both the Kindle and iPhone gather dust while I'm stitching. That's why I love my iPod -- I can listen to recorded books while I stitch.

I love your sampler wall, Melissa! It looks great.

I had a good time reading all the comments about Kindle vs iPad, etc. I'll be honest and say that I had no idea that Apple was coming out with anything like the iPad till I read people complaining about it on Facebook. LOL I shut off my news feeds when the economies in the US & Ireland tanked--I worry enough for everybody that I didn't need to additional info--so wow. I think I'm pretty cool, just having acquired an iPhone, which is the first iPod type thing I've ever had. I used to have to borrow my daughter's Nano. I'm looking forward to hearing what you decide to get in the end.
